WADESBORO — Polls closed and ballots tallied as results were finally posted in what seemed like a never-ending election cycle.

The Anson County Board of Elections posted the final results of absentee, early and polling site votes by 10:15 p.m. on Nov. 3. The wait is due in part of four North Carolina counties extending their polling time because of delays in opening on Election Day. This pushed back the entire state. No one was allowed to post results until 8:15 p.m.

Little by little, the Anson County precincts brought over votes on a flash drive. From there, the Board of Elections uploaded into the computer, sending it to the state and posting it on paper at the Board’s building.

The closest race in Anson County was for the Register of Deeds. Challenger Dannie Montgomery, a Democrat, fell short to Greg Eudy, who is unaffiliated with any party.

Not only was the Register of Deeds the closest, it seemed to be the most watched after several incident reports against Montgomery’s team were filed by the Eudy campaign, catching the attention of Congressman Dan Bishop.

These reports were filed during early voting, but other incidents rolled in on Election Day.

Despite the incident reports and frustration felt from the Eudy team watching their opponent break statute, Eudy pulled through to keep his job as the Anson County Register of Deeds.

Jeffrey Bricken (UNA), beat out Bobby Sikes (D) for a seat with the Anson County Board of Commissioners. Robert Mims (D) will also be filling a seat on the Anson County Board of Commissioners as he defeated Brian Johnson (R). Both Bricken and Mims are new additions to the board.

The Soil and Water District Supervisor race went to Gary Sikes over John Springer.

In the state and national races, Anson County went blue, although strong campaigning from the Republicans tightened the races.

In the Presidential race, Joe Biden received 5,768 votes compared to Donald Trump’s 5,301 in Anson County. North Carolina has not been called for either candidate as of Wednesday afternoon. Mail-in ballots are still being counted and accepted until Nov. 12, as long as those ballots were post marked by Election Day.

Cal Cunningham (D) collected more votes in Anson County than challenger Tom Tillis for the United States Senate race. The votes were 5,735 for Cunningham and, for Tillis, 4,963. This race has also not been called yet.

U.S. Congressional District 9 proved to be closer in the county as Democrat Cynthia Wallace collected 5,793 votes and Republican Dan Bishop, received 5,232. However, Bishop won the race overall.

Incumbent Governor Roy Cooper received 6,096 votes, while Dan Forest only got 4,956 in Anson County. Cooper was announced as the winner by the Associated Press.

There’s not much middle ground regarding the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. I’ve listened to some praising our Justices as well as others, usually louder, vilifying them. But after the rhetoric wanes a bit there’s one common ground on which most all can agree: elections matter.

RALEIGH — Movie sequels are almost always worse than the original films. Notable exceptions, such as this summer’s Top Gun: Maverick, merely prove the rule. For every Empire Strikes Back, there’s a Highlander 2: The Quickening, Halloween Kills, and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.

RALEIGH — Results from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s 2022 Wild Turkey Harvest Summary report shows that hunters statewide recorded 20,576 birds harvested statewide in 2022, including 1,777 birds that were taken during youth season. The total falls short of the past two years’ record-breaking totals, however it remains strong compared to totals prior to 2020.

RALEIGH — On Friday, Gov. Roy Cooper released the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The Rookie team from Anson Athletic Youth Association All Star team won the 2022 District 1 Tournament earlier this month. The team remained undefeated through the tournament until their championship game where they took one loss to a very talented Mt. Pleasant team but came back in Game 3 and won the District. By winning the district, the team won a bid to the 2022 NC Dixie Youth AA State Tournament in Winnabow, NC. The tournament starts July 8th and runs through July 13th.

North Carolina is blessed with more than its share of great writers. And I am looking over some of my favorites from my 20-plus years hosting PBS-NC’s North Carolina Bookwatch.

I was around sixteen years old when my grandmother gave me one of my most prized possessions, the red, ornate, hardback version of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, complete with foldout maps of Middle Earth. I set into it immediately and, within a few days, had it read from cover to cover.

Last week’s U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that Americans no longer have a constitutional right to control their own reproduction is a disaster of monumental proportions. Never before in U.S. history has the nation’s high court taken away such a well-established and long exercised fundamental right.

If there ever was a time to protest the injustices of poverty, now is a good one. A March report from Bloomberg declares that families will face $5,200 more in annual expenditures for the same basket of goods. Unfortunately, that report dropped before a later inflation report in May, showing a higher increase than expected. The inflation number surged from a 7.9% increase in March to 8.6% in May. Costs for gasoline are up twice as much as last year. Food costs are up over 10%, while most experts expect that it will continue to rise. The middle class can weather the storm for a time, but the poor continue to be bludgeoned by misguided policies.

PINEHURST — The first graduates of the FirstHealth Emergency Medical Technician Academy were recognized during a special ceremony at Moore Regional.

ROCKINGHAM — The Rockingham Police Department has arrested two suspects following their involvement in an attempted murder and robbery on South Skipper Street on May 23.
